Vardzia: Georgia’s Remarkable Medieval Cave City
Vardzia Cave City
Vardzia is one of Georgia’s greatest medieval monuments. The complex stretches along a cliff above the Mtkvari River in Samtskhe-Javakheti and was developed mainly during the 12th century under King Giorgi III and Queen Tamar.
Inside the Rock-Cut Complex
The site once served as a fortified town, monastery and cultural centre. Its caves were linked by stairways and hidden passages, while water channels and storage rooms helped support the community. Earthquakes and invasions damaged much of Vardzia, yet hundreds of spaces remain visible today.
The Church of the Dormition forms the spiritual heart of the complex. Its medieval frescoes include important portraits from Georgia’s Golden Age. Walking through the caves also reveals wine cellars, balconies and wide views across the valley.
Planning Your Visit
- Wear shoes with good grip because some passages are steep.
- Allow at least two hours to explore.
- Combine the trip with Khertvisi Fortress or Akhaltsikhe.
