Davit Gareja: Georgia’s Desert Monastery Complex
Davit Gareja Monastery Complex
Davit Gareja is a remarkable group of rock-cut monasteries in the semi-desert of eastern Georgia. Founded in the 6th century by Saint David Garejeli, the complex expanded over many centuries and became a major centre of Georgian spiritual life, learning and art.
A Landscape of Caves and History
Monastic cells, chapels and halls were carved into the dry slopes of Gareja. Water collection systems helped communities survive in this demanding environment. Several churches preserve valuable medieval frescoes, including portraits of Georgian rulers and religious scenes.
The active Lavra monastery is the best-known part of the complex. The surrounding coloured hills and open steppe create a landscape very different from Georgia’s greener mountain regions.
