Municipalities

Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti is divided into four municipalities: Ambrolauri (Lower Racha), Oni (Upper Racha), Tsageri (Lechkhumi), and Lentekhi (Kvemo Svaneti). Within these, the region counts three cities – Ambrolauri, Oni, and Tsageri – as well as the towns of Lentekhi and Kharistvala. Covering 4,954 km², this land is known for its extraordinary history, architectural marvels, and diverse natural wonders, from snow-capped peaks and deep caves to fast-flowing rivers, waterfalls, and highland lakes.

History of Racha-Lechkhumi – Kvemo Svaneti

Tsageri is home to the legendary Khvamli Mountain, famously connected with the myth of Prometheus, who was chained there after defying the gods.

Beyond myth, archaeology shows that this region has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Bronze and Iron Age relics discovered here, alongside evidence of ancient copper mining in Svaneti, highlight its role in early metallurgy. The upper Rioni River valley once housed a major bronze production center, enabling the Svans to thrive, while Svaneti’s gold resources tied it to the legendary Kingdom of Colchis and the myth of the Golden Fleece.

Protected by both geography and fortresses, the region often sheltered kings and nobles fleeing enemies. Tsageri itself was regarded as a treasury of the kingdom.

Historical Monuments

One of Georgia’s greatest architectural masterpieces, the Nikortsminda Church, stands proudly in this region. Other remarkable sites include Barakoni, Labechina, Mravaldzali, Goni Archangel, and Shromisubani churches; the Skhieri Monastery Complex; the Khotevi and Minda Fortresses; Kvaratsikhe Fortress; the cyclopean Natsikhari; Goni and Tskheti St. George Churches; the Muri and Orbeliani Fortresses; and the Oni Synagogue, among many others.

Prometheus Mountain, Shaori Reservoir & Natural Treasures

The landscapes of Racha-Lechkhumi – Kvemo Svaneti span alpine peaks, deep caves, mountain rivers, and crystal-clear lakes. The mystical Khvamli Mountain (Khomli) in Lechkhumi, stretching across Tsageri and Tskaltubo municipalities, has long inspired legends. Ancient Greek sources described it as the place where Zeus chained Prometheus, where Heracles freed him, and where the Argonauts once passed. Georgian folklore adds that Khvamli conceals an immense secret – perhaps treasure, perhaps something else entirely.

The natural icons of the region include the Shaori and Lajana Reservoirs, the Nikortsminda and Skhvava karst caves, the Rachkha, Chkumi, and Sikvaruli (Love) Waterfalls, and the Kulbaki, Udziro, and Sasvano Lakes. Adventurers can also explore the Buba and Kirtishi Glaciers, the Chiora and Khikhata Mountains, and striking formations such as the Sairme Pillars and Askhivi Massif.

Resorts

This region is a paradise for mountain tourism and therapeutic retreats. Its mineral-rich waters have given rise to numerous balneological and climatic resorts, including Shovi, Utsera, Lashichala, and Bugeuli, making it ideal for both relaxation and active recreation.

Unique Wines & Cuisine

Racha-Lechkhumi – Kvemo Svaneti is also one of Georgia’s premier wine regions, with numerous indigenous grape varieties thriving on its slopes. Among them are Aleksandrouli, Rachuli Mtsvane, Rachuli Tetra, Mujuretuli, Usakhelouri, Orbeluri Ojaleshi, and Tsolikouri.

The celebrated Khvanchkara, a semi-sweet red blend of Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli from Lower Racha, is renowned worldwide. Tvishi, a semi-sweet white wine made from Tsolikouri grapes, is another local gem, while Usakhelouri, an extremely rare and prized wine from Lechkhumi, is considered one of Georgia’s finest.

Local cuisine is equally distinct and delicious. Signature dishes include khavitsi (a rich cheese fondue), Rachuli lori (local smoked ham), lobiani (bean-stuffed bread), tskaldaskhmula (cornbread with dips), and celebrated Svan specialties such as kubdari (meat-filled bread with spices), chvishtari (cornbread with cheese), and tashmijabi (a stretchy blend of potatoes and cheese).
